Dashboard Widgets for iPhone

Posted by Kavin

Irish iPhone developer, Steven Troughton-Smith who had figured out a way to enable Emoji icons on the iPhone using a simple hack (even if you aren't on Japan's SoftBank network) has revealed plans to bring the Dashboard to the iPhone which is supposed to work like Dashboard on a Mac; giving you easy access to your favorite widgets.

He has also released a video of his work-in-progress Dashboard app for the iPhone.

For all you Windows users out there, here is a brief description of Dashboard software that is available on Mac (courtesy Wikipedia):
Dashboard is an application for Apple's Mac OS X operating systems, used for hosting widgets is a semi-transparent layer that is invisible to the user unless activated by clicking its icon in the Dock or alternatively can be invoked by moving the cursor into a preassigned hot corner, or by pressing a hot key, both of which can be set to the user's preference.

When Dashboard is activated, the user's desktop is dimmed and widgets appear in the foreground. Like application windows, they can be moved around, rearranged, deleted, and recreated (so that more than one of the same Widget is open at the same time, possibly with different settings). New widgets can be opened, via an icon bar on the bottom of the layer, by dragging a widget icon out into the layer.

Steven Troughton-Smith has released a video of his work-in-progress Dashboard for the iPhone (seen here running through the SDK).

It definitely looks quite cool but I don't see the need of Dashboard widgets for the iPhone as shown in the video. It is pointless to have a widget of an analog clock when you have the clock right at the top of the screen.

It would make more sense if the Dashboard widgets showed up when iPhone's screen is locked. It would be nice to have easy access to the notes widget and maybe another widget to have a quick look at unread mails but these widgets should be available when iPhone's screen is locked just like Intelliscreen. It could be an interesting alternative to running iPhone apps in the background but would be at the cost of poor battery life.

What do you think about Dashboard for the iPhone? Do you think it will be useful on the iPhone? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
